At Barcelona, a judge has ruled as illegal the 40 euros fee for issuing the boarding pass at the airport.
Ryanair has decided to appeal that decision.
If that decision is confirmed, Ryanair plans to dispense with the issue of boarding pass at the airport :

http://www.ryanair.com/en/news/ryanair-statement-on-boarding-card-reissue-fees

Ryanair’s appeal will be based on the following facts:
1. All passengers agree at the time of booking that they will check-in online, and print off their own boarding cards at least 4 hours prior to the scheduled departure of their flight.
2. Should a passenger arrive at the airport without their boarding card, then they are not entitled to fly, and there is no obligation on Ryanair to provide them with replacements.
3. Should this ruling not be reversed on appeal, then Ryanair will dispense with the boarding card reissue fee altogether, and passengers who arrive at the airport without the agreed pre-printed boarding card will not be able to pass through security or board their aircraft.

Unsure how they can find it unlawful.... yes maybe overpriced but i dont remember a law being set to a limit.... i think the government suck us dry with taxes and the same for fuel and insurance companies with rediculous expensive prices which seem to be plucked out of thin air... hope the courts in the uk find this unlawful too.

I've said it many times before. If you're stupid enough to 'forget' that you need a boarding pass to board an aircraft, then you deserve to pay the charge Smile And we all know that you get numerous emails reminding you that you need to check-in online and print your pass.

maybe the policy that you're not able to print a boarding pass anymore from 4 hrs before departing time should be changed. Not the 40€ are crap, but the limited possibility to print your own boarding card.

http://www.thenewsonline.es/news/national/3040-judge-rules-against-ryanair

The judge said that her ruling was not firm and could not oblige Ryanair to stop applying the clause and she expected the case to be taken to the European Court of Justice. She said Spanish passengers now had a first judicial ruling to back their demands for the return of the penalty for not printing the pass.

Judge finds against Ryanair
BUDGET AIRLINE Ryanair’s practice of making a €40 counter charge to passengers that fail to print out an online boarding pass is destined to be brought to a halt as a result of a ruling made by Judge Barbara Maria Cordoba in the Barcelona Court, Friday 14th January, finding in favour of plaintiff Dan Miro, who took the airline to court when he was charged €40 by Ryanair for a printed boarding pass as a passenger between Girona and Alghero.

Ryanair requires that passengers present a printed boarding pass to be allowed to travel. However, the judge declared that the contractual clause that enables Ryanair to impose the additional charge constitutes “abusive practice,” finding that Ryanair, as with any licenced carrier, is obligated to provide passengers with a ticket.

The individual case is being seen as a precedent to a broader ban being imposed by the TSJUE (Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Union Europea).

In the meantime, Ryanair argued that these measures are necessary in order to keep tickets at a low and affordable price and stated that if a ruling is placed to ban such practice, the airline will in future simply disallow passengers to board without a printed and valid boarding pass.
