Modlin closed until ?
http://www.ryanair.com/en/notices/gops/121222-init_WMI_runwaycls-GB
Ryanair was advised by Warsaw Modlin airport at 15:00 hrs today (22 Dec) of an indefinite runway closure for safety reasons.
This runway closure will cause significant flight delays, diversions and possible cancellations and Ryanair intends to divert all Warsaw flights, where possible, to Warsaw Chopin airport, until 24:00hrs Thursday 27 Dec.
Ryanair is seeking further information and details about the cause of this runway closure from Modlin airport. Until such time as Modlin airport advises that the runway has reopened, Ryanair intends to operate all flights to/from Warsaw Chopin airport.
All passengers booked to travel between the 22-27 December 2012 should go directly to Warsaw Chopin Airport
Passenger’s boarding passes from Modlin flights can be used for flights now operating from Warsaw Chopin Airport
An email and SMS has been sent to all affected passengers detailing other rebooking/refund options if required.
Ryanair apologises sincerely for any delays or inconvenience caused by this unexpected runway closure.
Full details of updates, delays and/or cancellations will be published on the “Live Flight Information” page on the Ryanair.com website.

The runway is closed by the General Office of Building Control , and shortened from 2,500 to 1,500 meters due to surface problems, which now need to be fixed under warranty by the original developer.
The original runway was "old style" : made from concrete slabs. Putting asphalt on top of it is cheap & quick, but.........
Construction of the airport was rushed, see now the results. No ILS and often fog (close to a river) makes things worse.

Re: Modlin closed until ?
It does appear to never be open!! What Re Ryans options? Is a permanent move to Chopin on the cards? I guess we shall soon see, It can't be good to continue to operate from somewhere that's shut most of the winter, unless Ryanair can use the to renegotiate costs or something

Re: Modlin closed until ?
I read on another forum (can't remember which) that the runway had been closed after a significant amount of cracks had been discovered on the runway. I shall see if I can find the source of this info.

Re: Modlin closed until ?
Modlin will most likely be closed until April or May!
21.01. Warsaw (PAP) - The Modlin airport (central Poland) will reopen for big passenger planes probably in May or April, Modlin airport CEO Piotr Okienczyc said Monday.
Poland's newest airport Warsaw-Modlin opened in July. It is situated 40 kilometres north of Warsaw. In December, the Mazowsze province construction supervision authority closed a part of Modlin's runway because of surface problems. In effect the runway was reduced to 1,500 metres making it impossible for bigger planes to land.
On Monday the airport received an expertise of the repaired runway and sent it immediately to the Mazowsze province construction supervision authority. "We are now waiting for its decision. We do not know how it will look like as the expertise is ambiguous," Okienczyc said.
If the construction supervision authority does not change its decision (on the closure of part of Modlin's runway), we will have to wait with more repairs until temperatures are above zero degrees," Okienczyc said and added that in such situation the airport will reopen for bigger passenger planes in April or May. Re: Modlin closed until ?
The return to Warsaw Modlin is again postponed - to 26th october 2013, this time.
Discussions with Warsaw Modlin Airport are ongoing and any further updates will be published on the Ryanair.com website.
Modlin airport re-opened on 3 July after over six months of runway repairs. But since the reopening, the airport has had no commercial airline traffic.
Ryanair appears to be concerned about how to transport passengers to and from Modlin, up to one-hours drive from the capital.
