RYANAIR will sell €10 flights to the US when it finally manages to get the long-haul aircraft needed, airline chief Michael O'Leary has said.

The airline has a business plan ready for launching transatlantic flights but admits it will be several years before it can get the planes needed.
Ryanair would offer €10 flights to Boston and New York and US$10 (€7.30) seats back to Europe.
However, passengers would pay extra for everything from meals to baggage.
The flights would not operate from Dublin but would fly from 12-14 major European cities to 12-14 major US destinations and a full service would begin within six months of Ryanair getting the aircraft to do so.
Not every seat will be €10 of course, there will also need to be a very high number of business or premium seats," he said.
However, it would be four to five years before this happened as the various state-backed Gulf airlines are buying up all available aircraft, without the same need to get a good price as private airlines.

Currently, the lowest one-way fares for flights between London and New York hover around $250 if booked months in advance. However, analysts say the Ryanair plan could massively undercut even the cheapest deals now on sale.

“If Ryanair were to enter the North Atlantic market, they could single-handedly control pricing. They would be the undisputed pricing leader,” Henry Harteveldt, an airline analyst with Hudson Crossing, explained to International Business Times. “If they were to offer a business class product, as O’Leary has mentioned, they would certainly pose a major challenge to established airlines.”

Harteveldt said it would be interesting to see the product offering, as current flights do not have reclining seats or window shades. Also, which airports would Ryanair choose to fly to: the major airports or regional alternatives like Providence instead of Boston Logan and Islip instead of New York JFK?

O’Leary has talked about entering the long-haul market for years, and Harteveldt cautioned that it’s best not to make too much of it until the airline makes an official announcement.

Moreover, any shift away from Ryanair’s core European strategy would likely pave the way for a separate division charged with operating the long-haul flights, as has been the case for similar budget carriers like AirAsia and Jetstar. Ryanair would also need to reconfigure its ticketing systems away from the current point-to-point structure to be a credible competitor.

Nevertheless, Harteveldt said if Ryanair does make its U.S.-to-Europe flights work one day, it would be “a credible threat to any airline it competes with.”

So what would a long-haul flight with Ryanair be like?

Seating

Currently Ryanair has a fleet of almost 300 Boeing 737-800s. Seats have a “pitch” (depth) of 30 inches and are 17 inches wide.
A handful of premium economy seats have slightly more legroom, with a pitch of 32-34 inches.

Norwegian, which flies from Europe to Bangkok and the US (with flights from Gatwick to the States due to start in the summer) uses Boeing 787 Dreamliners with a seat pitch of 31-32 inches, and a width 17.2. It also has a premium economy section (pitch 46, width 19).

AirAsia X’s economy seats are have a pitch of 32 inches and are 16.5 inches wide. It also has a dozen flat bed seats in business class, with a pitch of 60 inches and a width of 20.

Jetstar seats have a 31-inch pitch and are 17.5 inches wide (or 38 and 20 in “Star Business”).

So it can be assumed that travellers on a long-haul Ryanair flight won’t get much more room that they currently have now – perhaps a single inch more legroom at most – unless they purchase the “premium” seats mentioned by Mr O’Leary.

BA’s 777s and Virgin’s A330s have a seat pitch of 31 inches and a width of 17.5 in economy.

Emirates, on its most common model, the Boeing 777-200ER, uses a seat pitch of 32-34 inches and a width of 17 in economy class.

If the route was to go ahead seems (EGSS) London Stansted would be the favoured departure point.
