New bases Empty New bases

Post by atoutprix Tue 21 Oct 2008 - 18:11

Ryanair announces two new bases to be opened in march 2009 : 1 aircraft will be based at Alghero (AHO) and 2 aircraft at Cagliari (CAG).
These two bases are in Sardegna (an Italian island south of Corsica, west of mainland Italy). AHO lies in the north, CAG in the south of the island.

From the Ryanair website :

RYANAIR OPENS TWO NEW ITALIAN BASES (ALGHERO AND CAGLIARI), INCREASES ROUTES AND FREQUENCIES FROM ROME CIAMPINO
1 MILLION £5 SEATS FOR TRAVEL NOV- JAN

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline today (Tuesday, 21st October 2008) announced that it will open two new Italian bases in Alghero and Cagliari, in March 2009. These two new bases will create 8 new domestic and 11 new international routes to/from the island of Sardinia. Ryanair also announced that it will increase frequency to 5 daily return flights on the Rome-Milan route (from Nov 24th) and from Dec 4th it will add a new route with a twice daily Rome-Trapani service. Alghero and Cagliari become Ryanair’s 6th and 7th Italian bases with 3 new aircraft worth over $210m.

At Alghero, Ryanair will base 1 brand new Boeing 737-800 series aircraft, it will operate 18 routes to/from the North Sardinian city, delivering 1.2 million passengers p.a., sustaining 1,200 local jobs, and saving visitors to/from Alghero more than €130m over the high fares and fuel surcharges presently levied by Alitalia.

At its Cagliari base, Ryanair will start with 2 new based aircraft, offering 19 routes, delivering annual traffic of over 1.3m passengers, sustaining 1,300 local jobs and saving passengers over €150m, compared to the high fares and fuel surcharges presently levied by Alitalia.

These two new Italian bases will in 2009 increase Ryanair’s presence in Italy to 7 bases (Rome, Milan, Pisa, Bologna, Forli, Alghero and Cagliari) over 15 million passengers annually, which is sustaining 15,000 jobs at Italian airports and saving Italian consumers and visitors more than €1.5bn annually over the high fares and fuel surcharges being levied upon them by the Alitalia domestic monopoly.

The celebrate these two exciting new bases and routes, Ryanair today released 1 million £5 (all inclusive) seats for travel in November, December and January. These seats (which include all taxes and charges) are available for booking on www.Ryanair.com until midnight Thursday 23rd October next.

Announcing this Italian expansion, Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said:

“Italy is now Ryanair’s second largest market after the UK. At a time when Alitalia and Air One are merging, increasing fares and raising unjustified fuel surcharges, the conditions for more Ryanair low fare growth in Italy have never been better. Ryanair is already the No.1 international airline in Italy, carrying more international passengers to/from Italy than Alitalia.

“This investment in two new bases in Italy, with additional domestic routes and frequencies from our Rome Ciampino base, means that Ryanair will continue to grow its domestic operations in Italy, in a market where Italian consumers have been ripped off for many years by Alitalia’s high fares, fuel surcharges and strike ridden services. Only Ryanair guarantees the lowest fares and no fuel surcharges in Italy, which is why Ryanair continues to be the fastest growing, and the largest airline carrying people to/from Italy. This expansion will allow Ryanair to replicate that success on Italian domestic routes, particularly to the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, which will lower the cost of travel for Italian consumers, as well as making it more affordable for millions more European visitors to travel to the beautiful islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

“Ryanair’s growth in Italy is all the more important now that Alitalia and Air One are merging to form a higher fare, fuel surcharging, domestic monopoly. Thanks to these new bases, routes and frequencies, many more Italian consumers now have a real choice between Alitalia’s high fare, fuel surcharging flights or Ryanair’s lowest fare, no fuel surcharge flights. We remain confident that millions of Italian domestic passengers will continue to switch from Alitalia to Ryanair in the coming months and years”.

"Ryanair will have a total of seven bases in Italy after the latest additions. O'Leary said he expected Ryanair to carry more passengers than those carried by Alitalia domestically within two years. Mocking the "I love Italy, I fly Alitalia" slogan coined by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi while campaigning for national elections in April, Ryanair unveiled its own version of the phrase: "Love Italy, Fly Ryanair".
looks like they wish to take on Alitalia in the domestic market .... with one and two aircraft they will be very small bases ....

I think Paris will be a new base, because Ryanair flies to Paris from 21 destinations! That is more than some bases (Kerry, Cork, Belfast, Bournemouth, Barcelona REU and Bologna). They even fly to Venice and Porto (same story, also more destinations than some bases) wich aren't even bases!

Palma de Mallorca, Oslo, Bratislava, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Turin, Carcassone, Riga and Billund are for me also candidates for new bases. What's your opinion here about?

Porto is the eternal candidate... but I think Poland is the country which will receive the next base.

Poznañ
has small one aircraft base by Wizzair. £ód¼ is trying to be more important in
polish marked, but they are very small now. They’ve started to be seen some
time ago, but after several successes, they almost died with cuttings by FR and
Central Wings. After that they have started works to improve airport infrastructure
and connections with airlines. For example oficcialy Wizzair aircrafts, which
are scheduled to land at Warsaw, Katowice or Poznañ
(all of them are Wizz bases) but in case of fog/whatever cannot, they should
land in £ód¼. So maybe not now, but in near future they may be important. But
only in case if plans of low-cost airport near Warsaw will fail. This is a case since few
years, MOL said he would push 6 planes there just like that, but local governments
seems to have some “technical problems” with starting this potentially airport.
About Wroc³aw,
hm… I’d like to. There was some story few days ago that Wizzair will start it’s
base here, but it was only rumours. I’d like to have some more competition
here, because at the moment there is only Norwegian with 1, and Wizzair with 2
destinations. And as I see, at summer plan FR is probable cutting frequency of
few, usually cheapest destinations.

About some rumours, I think, that FR overslept Prague opportunity. As Sky
Europe is seriously going to bankrupt, Wizzair instantaneously based one of
their aircraft there. They’ve owned many potential passengers just like that.
Also take a look on the Ukrainian market. Wizzair opened new subcompany Wizzair
Ukraine to start domestic
flights, and after few months, they’ve got government agreement to start
international flights from Ukraine.
Now they have 7 routes from Kiev and Ukrain is
potentially another undiscovered for low cost company air-market as Poland
used to be several years ago.

And cream of the crop right now. Quote from polish forum
about reservation made on Fumicino’s slots. New base probable? Very Happy

Me again Wink
There is no more info about Fiumicino. It would be good move for company, as Bergamo will be close in
few years. But as some thinks, Hahn
Airport authority agreed
with Ryanair so few planes will be there instead of their movement to
Fiumicino.

Other seemingly serious rumour is about polish KRK. After
finished case with CRL, that it’s legal to make some kind of donation for base,
became some ideas with similar way in Cracov. There was Sky Europe and
Centralwings bases there, but the first one moved out to Prague even before it’s bankruptcy, and the
second one finished it’s activity last year. Even Wizzair and Germanwings
packed their packs and moved to Katowice
Airport nearby. Last year
Cracov, as only one polish airport has decreased amount of passengers. So local
authorities started to think how to stop this trend, and they was asking themselves
about some official help with getting some airline to make it’s base there. Ryanair
has less connection than for example Easy Jet there, but as some wrote, Cracov
airport’s authorities went out to Dublin
to speak about it’s proposal. Now they’re waiting for FR’s answer and after
another two weeks they’ll answer back. Probable company said, that they may
doubled KRK’s amount of passengers in two years and make it 300% year later. Some
write about two or three Boeings stored there. Officials officially say, that
they have E 3 millions for donation, but as one may agree with it, other local authorities
are not so sure to spend this money this way. So, it’s like many things in Poland Wink

Probable all things will be clear about mid of Feb, or begin
of march. And as few ppl has written – only when we see Boeings stored there,
we believe that FR open it’s base there.

I guess you mean Ciampino could be closed - as far as I know, Bergamo is not threatened at the moment.
