Re: Ryanair Base in Switzerland?
I think Zwitserland is too expensive and doesn't really like nor want LCC.
Zurich has recently thrown out a LCC by raising the prices in order to get rid of it (easyJet ?).
There is just Geneva, a city somewhat atypic in Switserland, but easyJet is already there ... and doing well.

Re: Ryanair Base in Switzerland?
There was a good feature on Basel airport in "Airports of the world" Jan-Feb 2006, where I took most of the following infos.
Basel - Mulhouse - Freiburg (BSL), aka EuroAirport, serves France, Germany and Switserland from its location just north of Basel, but on French territory.
EasyJet began flying from Basel in 2004, having moved its operations from Zurich following a dispute over the cost of airport charges there.
EasyJet has signed a ten-year loyalty agreement with the airport. The tariff scheme EuroAirport introduced in September 2004 modulate passengers fees according to annual passenger volumes. It rewards carriers who introduce new routes and bring in higher numbers of passengers.
The airline's tariffs are based on it using the older terminal wing on the Swiss side of the new terminal building, rather than the new Y pier. Its facilities have no airbridges, so passengers use airstairs and walk the short distance to the terminal.
It thus seems the LCC are welcome at BSL.
But easyJet has already set up a well-developed net from there.
EasyJet currently flies from Basel to :
- Spain : Alicante, Barcelone, Madrid, Malaga and Palma.
- Italy : Rome, Napoli, Cagliari, Olbia.
- England : Liverpool, Luton, Stansted.
- Portugal : Lisbonne, Porto.
- Germany : Berlin, Hamburg.
- the Netherlands : Amsterdam.
- France : Nice
- Marocco :Marrakech
- Turkey : Istanbul.
Is there room for another LCC, Ryanair for example ?
The main and best routes are already taken by easyJet, it would need a price war to win its passengers - or offer other destinations : Dublin, Glasgow, Scandinavian or Baltic countries ?
Addition to my post :
As a matter of fact, I had not seen it, but Ryanair is already flying from Basel to : Dublin, Valencia, Girona, Alicante and Stockholm ! It seems there is thus direct competition with easyJet on the Basel - Alicante route !

Re: Ryanair Base in Switzerland?
I think yes, because Ryanair and easyJet are opponents and try to trump each other, so maybe also in Switzerland...

Ryanair vs easyJet
There are few airports that are bases for both Ryanair and easyyJet; of course, there is Stansted, but do you know of others ?
And at the same destination, they often use different airports :
- Paris : Beauvais for Ryanair, Orly and CDG for easyJet
- Milan : Bergamo vs Malpensa
- Brussels : Charleroi vs Zaventem
I don't think they are really eager to engage a real confrontation on exactly the same route ...

Ryanair Airport in Switzerland?
Hello everyone,
there have been some posts some time ago on the presence of Ryanair in Switzerland.
Which are the reasons for not having/wanting a Ryanair base in Switzerland?
Is it really adversion for LCC?
What about ex-military airports (if there can be available in the little Switzerland!)?
Like for instance:
- Payerne, not far from Geneve, Basel, Berne
- Emmen, not far from Zurich, Lucerne and the Alps
Or public:
- Bern/Belp
Well, see search Wikipedia for List_of_airports_in_Switzerland
Thanks
R.
